India’s 73rd Republic Day celebrations

High Commission celebrated India’s 73rd Republic Day in Colombo on 26 January 2022. It was on 26 January 1950 that the world’s largest written constitution came into force. This momentous occasion will be observed through a series of ceremonies and events organized by the High Commission, throughout the day, in strict compliance with COVID-19 protocol.

After paying tributes to the fallen heroes of Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) at the IPKF memorial, High Commissioner Gopal Baglay hoisted India’s national flag at India House – residence of High Commissioner of India – and inspected the Guard of Honour. High Commissioner also read out excerpts of President of India’s message. A special video message from External Affairs Minister, Dr. S.Jaishankar was shared with the audience. The event also featured songs by the Sri Lanka Navy band and a cultural programme organized by High Commission’s Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center.
During the day, High Commissioner will participate in the Republic day celebrations at the Ratmalana Param Dhamma Chaitya Pirivena, where around 10 Indian students are studying. Prayers by the Mahasangha to invoke the blessings of The Buddha were organized during the event.
In the evening, a ceremonial reception is being organized at India House for friends of India.
73rd Republic Day of India coincides with celebrations of 75 years of India’s Independence-Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), across the globe. High Commission is commencing a series of special events dedicated to AKAM from 26 January 2022 – 4 February 2022. The events will include a mega cultural event, unveiling the bust of Rabindranath Tagore at Sri Palee Campus of University of Colombo, trade promotion event etc.

Consulate Generals of India in Hambantota and Jaffna and the Assistant High Commission in Kandy also observed the 73rd Republic Day of India by organizing special events.
